US: FCC Adopts GVP for High-Power Outdoor Use device in the 6 GHz Band

2026-03-25

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a Report and Order on January 29, 2026, introducing Geofenced Variable Power (GVP) devices to expand unlicensed use of the 6 GHz band. Key Summary: Introduction of a new device category: Geofenced Variable Power (GVP) Supports higher transmit power for outdoor operations Applies location-based control (“geofencing”) to manage permitted usage areas Intended to enable expanded connectivity while protecting incumbent services

 Scope / Frequency Bands Operation permitted in: U-NII-5: 5.925 – 6.425 GHz U-NII-7: 6.525 – 6.875 GHz Operation not permitted in: 5.850 – 5.925 GHz (allocated to Wi-Fi and C-V2X applications)

Compliance Notes GVP devices must implement geofencing mechanisms to restrict operation in defined geographic areas Measures are designed to ensure coexistence with licensed and incumbent users
