Energy-efficiency standards and labeling programs for household appliances, equipment, and lighting have been adopted not only in developed countries but also in many developing countries. They are contributing greatly to the global achievements in energy conservation. Many countries have mandatory minimum energy-efficiency standards and labeling programs; others have voluntary programs in place.
More than 80 countries now have an energy standards and labelling program.
The most commonly regulated products include:
Refrigerators
Room air conditioners
Lamps or ballasts
Televisions
While electronic products are now covered by a substantial number of countries, the most common measures tend to be voluntary endorsement labels, although recently products such as external power supplies, computers, set-top boxes, and other audio/video equipment have started to be covered by mandatory energy performance standards.
